Quote of the day

Gotta love this one … it’s often overlooked in business:

“However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.”

Winston Churchill

Saw it at Martin Perez’ Merge Left Marketing.

Quote of the day

This is a good one:

“The problem with communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished.”

- George Bernard Shaw

If your office is anything like mine … this is a fairly accurate observation.

Quote of the day

I love this one:

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.”

- Oscar Wilde

I just hope it’s not about me!

Quote of the day

Saw this today and kind of like it:

In an artificial world, only extremists live naturally.

From Paul Graham’s You Weren’t Meant to Have a Boss.

Quote of the day

I’m currently reading Chris Hunter’s Eight Lives Down, an autobiography of his time in Iraq with the British army as an explosives technician, defusing bombs and IEDs.

He starts off every chapter with a quote, and I really appreciated this one:

We tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing, and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress, while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.

- Gaius Petronius (AD 66)

Having gone through my fair share of re-orgs in the past decade, that 2000-year old quote rings very true.

Stress is violence

Saw this great quote today:

The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of innate violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything is to succumb to violence. More than that, it is cooperation with violence. The frenzy of the activist neutralizes his work for peace. It destroys his inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of his own work because it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.

- Thomas Merton

QOTD

Today’s quote of the day:”It is easier to act yourself into a new way of thinking than to think yourself into a new way of acting.”- Michael Pascal(From the introductory session of a lean “rapid improvement event” that we’re doing in my company. “Lean,” by the way, is a version of the Toyota Production System.)

the passionate sense of the potential

Gratuitous quote of the day:”If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of the potential.”- Soren KierkegaardThat is a great quote - I love it.
